We cover a lot of musical ground in worship and Inglewood First UMC!
This past Sunday, our worship theme, The Power of Our Roots, explored the strength we find drawing wisdom, inspiration and courage from God and the waters of our ancestors’ faith. We can live in the desert with desperation or live rooted in the river of life. Our ancestors teach us that even in the most perilous of times, we must not lose hope.
In worship, our music team led us in singing songs ranging from Negro Spirituals (“We Shall Not Be Moved”), anthems, (“Lift Every Voice & Sing”), 60’s pop (“Put A Little Love in Your Heart”), 80’s soul (“I Just Called to Say I Love You”) and gospel (“Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand”). We lifted up the names of those who demonstrated tremendous faith through challenging times and were reminded that in times of drought we too can find power in the waters of faith in God. As Jeremiah 17:8 says, “They will be like trees planted by the streams, whose roots reach down to the water. They won’t fear drought when it comes; their leaves will remain green. They won’t be stressed in the time of drought or fail to bear fruit.”
To illustrate this point, Pastor Victor showed how sample-based hip-hop music from De La Soul to Juice WRLD to Kirk Franklin draws inspiration from the past to create a new future. Below is a playlist of all the songs we covered! Our roots are deep, like the trees planted by the waters!
Next Sunday, we will continue our Power to the People / Black History Month worship series with special music from the Ghana Wesley Methodist Fellowship of Southern California! See you Sunday at 10:00 am!
