Psalm 130 (Common English Bible)

I cry out to you from the depths, Lord— 2 my Lord, listen to my voice!
 Let your ears pay close attention to my request for mercy!

3 If you kept track of sins, Lord— my Lord, who would stand a chance?
4 But forgiveness is with you— that’s why you are honored.

5 I hope, Lord.  My whole being hopes, and I wait for God’s promise.
6 My whole being waits for my Lord—
   more than the night watch waits for morning;
yes, more than the night watch waits for morning!

7 Israel, wait for the Lord!
    Because faithful love is with the Lord;
because great redemption is with our God!
8 He is the one who will redeem Israel from all its sin.

Summary:

Lent is a season where Christians commit to a season of fasting and prayer.  When we fast, we lose comfort and convenience, but we find greater faith and grow closer to God.

In a wilderness experience, the psalmist cries out to God for mercy. She has lost a connection with God and prays it will be restored. While waiting, the psalmist implores Israel to wait on the Lord, because in God there is faithful love and redemption. In the wilderness we can lose our connection to God, but wait on the Lord, because faithful love and redemption is with God.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is a word, phrase or image that comes to mind when you read or hear the text?
  2. What does this scripture teach you about waiting?
  3. What does God invite you to do, change or be through this passage?
