Luke 10:38-42 (Common English Bible)

38 While Jesus and his disciples were traveling, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his message. 40 By contrast, Martha was preoccupied with getting everything ready for their meal. So Martha came to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to prepare the table all by myself? Tell her to help me.”

41 The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things. 42 One thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part. It won’t be taken away from her.”

Summary:

Our worship theme in July is “Can I Live?”  We are exploring how God guides us to live in the face of distractions and obstacles before us. We will encounter interruptions, but Jesus helps us stay the course of life.

“What happens when you assume?” In this story, Martha assumes that her sister, Mary, was being unhelpful and wasting their time. Jesus shows Martha, however, that by actively listening and receiving his teachings, Mary was working, but in a different way. We can live as family when we’re careful not to make assumptions and start asking questions. Before making an accusation, let us stop to listen!

Reflection Questions:

  1. Why is it so easy to make assumptions?
  2. What damage can occur what we assume?
  3. How is God helping you to see people in a new way? What assumption is God helping you to let go of?
