Psalm 37:8-11 (New Revised Standard Version)
8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath.
Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For the wicked shall be cut off,
but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;
though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there.
11 But the meek shall inherit the land,
and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
Summary:
Throughout February and Black History Month, our theme, Power to the People, will explore how the power of God’s love moves us from bondage to freedom.
The Psalmist reminds us not to fret whether justice will prevail for “the meek shall inherit the earth.” Meek does not mean “weak,” but rather it as inheritance of our ancestors, reminding us to not lose sight of the sacred promise that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). God has given us power to transform the world and our inheritance is on the horizon.
Reflection Questions:
- What do you cherish that your family has promised to you?
- What does God promise the “meek?”
- What power do you find in the promise of justice?
