Psalm 77:1-2, 11-12 (Common English Bible)

1 I cry out loud to God—
 out loud to God so that he can hear me!

2 During the day when I’m in trouble I look for my Lord.
At night my hands are still outstretched and don’t grow numb;
my whole being refuses to be comforted.

11 But I will remember the Lord’s deeds;
yes, I will remember your wondrous acts from times long past.

12 I will meditate on all your works;
I will ponder your deeds.

Summary:

Our worship theme in June is “The Inheritance of God.” Throughout the month, we will explore the goods we inherit from God to live in purpose, power and love.

In this scripture, the Psalmist reveals our source of power when trials and despair overwhelm us. The speaker finds power in crying out to God and meditating on God. Some express themselves outwardly in prayer for God’s help, others look inward in silent prayer and meditation for God’s presence, but this scripture says that in order to live in power, we must do both! When we make our pleas known to God outwardly and meditate on God’s works inwardly, we claim our inheritance of empowerment to face our trials head on.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What was the last prayer you prayed openly and verbally? How often do you pray?
  2. When was the last time you silently meditated on God? Have you meditated before?
  3. When did you last feel balance in your life? How do you need God to restore balance in you?
