Opening Prayer

Kind and gracious Lord, you are the creator of all things, the author of life, and our loving God. We thank you for your faithful presence in our lives, and we thank you for the Word of God.

As we prepare to study your Word together, we ask you to open our minds. Help us clear away the clutter and quiet any outside voices so we can hear only what you long to speak to us.

Scripture: Psalm 119:137-144 (Common English Bible)

137 Lord, you are righteous,
    and your rules are right.
138 The laws you commanded are righteous,
    completely trustworthy.
139 Anger consumes me
because my enemies have forgotten what you’ve said.
140 Your word has been tried and tested;
    your servant loves your word!
141 I’m insignificant and unpopular,
but I don’t forget your precepts.
142 Your righteousness lasts forever!
    Your Instruction is true!
143 Stress and strain have caught up with me,
but your commandments are my joy!
144 Your laws are righteous forever.
Help me understand so I can live!

Summary:

What is God’s future for our lives? Our families? The church?  The world?  As believers, we are not called to wait on the future, but to walk into it. We are marching to Zion!  The future is now!

The Psalmist trusts God with her future. There may be others who do not understand, but God surely does. When we put our future in God’s hands, we can live!

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is a word, phrase or image that comes to mind when you read or hear the text?
  2. In this scripture, Psalmist is discouraged because of what others have said and done, but is encouraged by God’s Word. How has God’s Word been tried and tested in your life? What do you remember most about what God has done for you? What has God done that brings you joy?
  3. What does this scripture teach you about the future?
  4. What does God invite you to do, change or be through this passage?

Discipleship Huddle Questions:

  • How is it with your soul?
  • How does your soul prosper?

Closing Prayer

God, who lifts up the humble, give us guidance to see how we might be part of your mission of the redemption of the world. Give us the hands of compassion to extend your love and grace. Amen.
