Luke 21:15-19 (Common English Bible)

15 I’ll give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to counter or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed by your parents, brothers and sisters, relatives, and friends. They will execute some of you. 17 Everyone will hate you because of my name. 18 Still, not a hair on your heads will be lost. 19 By holding fast, you will gain your lives.

Summary:

We celebrate saints for their witness as followers of Jesus. Whether historical forerunners of the faith or “everyday saints” who have gone before us, we honor them by learning from their witness in being led by the Holy Spirit.

In this scripture, Jesus tells the disciples a hard truth. He tells them that they will be betrayed and some will be persecuted.  Yet, with everything they lose, they will gain their very lives. We, too, must receive the hard truth and by living in truth, we can continue to fight on!

Reflection Questions:

  1. What makes hearing the truth so frightening sometimes?
  2. How do you think the disciples received Jesus’ truth in this passage?
  3. What hard truth is Jesus teaching you to face?
