Scripture: John 21:15-19 (Common English Bible)
15 When they finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
Simon replied, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Jesus asked a second time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Simon replied, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 He asked a third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was sad that Jesus asked him a third time, “Do you love me?” He replied, “Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.”
Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 I assure you that when you were younger you tied your own belt and walked around wherever you wanted. When you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and another will tie your belt and lead you where you don’t want to go.” 19 He said this to show the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus said to Peter, “Follow me.”
Summary:
In Eastertide, we continue in the season of Resurrection through God in Jesus Christ. With Resurrection comes renewed challenges, renewed hopes and renewed possibilities. In order to seize the day, we must reset to realign with God’s will for our lives.
In this passage, Jesus calls Peter to reset his thinking. When we care for others, others will care for us. Let Jesus lead the way.
Reflection Questions:
- What is a word, phrase or image that comes to mind when you read or hear the text?
- Jesus tells Peter to take care of and feed his sheep three times. Jesus then reminds Peter that he may have been able to take care of himself when he was younger, but when he gets older, others will need to take care of him. Every stage in life we must reset to prepare for the next. Why do you think this lesson was hard for Peter to receive?
- What does this scripture teach you about love?
- What does God invite you to do, change or be through this passage?
Discipleship Huddle Questions:
- How is it with your soul?
- How does your soul prosper?
