Job 2:7-10 (Common English Bible)

7 The Adversary departed from the Lord’s presence and struck Job with severe sores from the sole of his foot to the top of his head. Job took a piece of broken pottery to scratch himself and sat down on a mound of ashes. Job’s wife said to him, “Are you still clinging to your integrity? Curse God, and die.”

10 Job said to her, “You’re talking like a foolish woman. Will we receive good from God but not also receive bad?” In all this, Job didn’t sin with his lips.

Summary:

Job is living a good and prosperous life when the devil tests his faith, bringing him misery and pain. Job’s wife tells him to give up, but he refuses to curse God, saying in good and bad times, God is with him and he is with God. As Job’s trials begin, he is disoriented, but keeps the faith. Even when others discourage us, we must keep the faith, trusting that God’s will will be done.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is your vision of the “good life”? How was Job living the “good life”?
  2. How would you have reacted to Job’s trials?
  3. Where do you turn when you are disoriented?
  4. What helps you “keep the faith?”
