Isaiah 11:1-4 (Common English Bible)

1 A shoot will grow up from the stump of Jesse; a branch will sprout from his roots.

2 The Lord’s spirit will rest upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a spirit of planning and strength, a spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

3 He will delight in fearing the Lord.
He won’t judge by appearances, nor decide by hearsay.

4 He will judge the needy with righteousness,
and decide with equity for those who suffer in the land.

Summary:

Advent means “preparation.” Every Sunday before Christmas, we light a candle to prepare for the birth of Jesus & anticipate Christ’s coming.  Through our Advent Worship Series, “Are We There Yet?,” we focus on how we arrive at Christ’s peace, hope, joy & love.

The prophet Isaiah speaks of a day when hope prevails because the Messiah will come, judge fairly and restore justice in the land. In other for us to arrive at the destination of hope, we must practice living in hope every day. When we bring hope on our journey, we arrive at God’s hope in the future.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is a word, phrase or image that comes to mind when you read or hear the text?
  2. What does this scripture teach you about hope?
  3. What does God invite you to do, change or be through this passage?
