In the United Methodist Church, Laity Sunday focuses on the celebration of the ministry of all lay Christians. On Laity Sunday, we celebrate that we are all called, laity as well as clergy, to go and make disciples in a world so desperately in need of hope through our humble service.  Learn more about Laity Sunday at www.umcdiscipleship.org.

Job 38:4-7 (Common English Bible)

Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?
    Tell me if you know.
Who set its measurements? Surely you know.
    Who stretched a measuring tape on it?
On what were its footings sunk;
    who laid its cornerstone,
    while the morning stars sang in unison
        and all the divine beings shouted?

Summary:

After Job finally gives up, God asserts authority over the universe and Job’s life. When fear has gripped our lives, we need the reminder that the God of the universe is on our side. The God who laid the foundations of the earth will help us find our voice.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever had difficulty finding your voice? Have you ever been scared to speak up?
  2. What difference does it make to speak up when others are with you?
  3. How is God calling you to use your voice with others?
