Luke 12:54-56 (Common English Bible)

5Jesus also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud forming in the west, you immediately say, ‘It’s going to rain.’ And indeed it does. 55 And when a south wind blows, you say, ‘A heat wave is coming.’ And it does.56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret conditions on earth and in the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret the present time?

Summary:

Based on John Wesley’s General Rules for Christian Living our worship series for August is themed, The Blueprint: A Guide to Follow Jesus. We are exploring a “blueprint” of what it is to be followers of Jesus Christ.

When Jesus calls us out for being hypocrites, he brings conflict, but isn’t conflict harmful? When we follow Jesus, we will be challenged to confront injustice and doing so will create conflict. Jesus conflict, nonviolent conflict, however, is about bringing about healing. The goal is not to destroy, but to build. Through nonviolent conflict, the goal is not to hurt but to heal.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How well do you accept criticism from others?
  2. Can you recall a time when someone corrected you and you received it well?
  3. What does Jesus want to correct in you? In what way is God revealing to you that you’re doing harm and is showing you a better way?
