Isaiah 58:6-9 (Common English Bible)

Is not this the fast that I choose:
    to loose the bonds of injustice,
to undo the thongs of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke?

Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,
    and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,
    and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
    and your healing shall spring up quickly;
your vindicator shall go before you,
    the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.

Summary:

Our February 2020 worship series explores what it means to be blessed.  Blessing comes in many different ways. Our heritage reminds us that in the midst of our struggles, God still blesses us.

Isaiah reminds us that true worship is expressed not in thanks for what God has done for use, but for how we take that blessing to bless others. God blesses us not for us only! When we bless others, God promises to bless us.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is a word, phrase or image that comes to mind when you read or hear the text?
  2. What does this scripture teach you about worship?
  3. What does God invite you to do, change or be through this passage?
