[Uplift Inglewood] Inglewood Passes Permanent Rent Stabilization After Years of Community Advocacy
Organizing works! We are thrilled to announce that yesterday the City of Inglewood passed a permanent rent stabilization ordinance, capping rent increases at 5% per year!
On Tuesday, June 11th Inglewood City Council passed a permanent rent stabilization ordinance for local residents. This comes after more than three years of community advocacy led by the Uplift Inglewood Coalition. Together we mobilized more than 150 residents to request amendments to the proposed ordinance, many of whom spoke in public comment for more than three hours requesting that the City Council reduce the annual rent cap from 8% to 5%. The ordinance includes Just Cause eviction protections, establishes a rent board, and caps rent increases at 5 percent per year, with some exceptions.
The City Council’s unanimous vote constitutes a major victory for the UpliftInglewood Coalition who, spearheaded a community-led campaign for rent stabilization that amassed more than 10,000 signatures for a ballot initiative last spring.
This victory demonstrates what is possible when people come together and demand change and fight for justice in their communities. It tells corporate landlords that rent gouging and exploiting residents will not be tolerated and we will stand up to fight for affordable housing for our neighbors.
Great work, everyone, and congratulations! Spread the word to your family and neighbors. We will have more updates to come about the details of the ordinance in the coming days.

Inglewood makes rent control permanent, sets cap at 5 percent
The council was initially set to vote on a cap of 8 percent, but dozens of tenants, many of them members of Uplift Inglewood, turned out to press for a lower threshold—and it worked.
Many made the argument that most people don’t get annual raises from their employers as high as 8 percent. They said longtime and lower-income residents deserve to be able to afford to stick around and enjoy Inglewood’s“resurrection.”
“We can’t resurrect as a city if everyone is relocated,” said Victor-Cyrus Franklin, a pastor at Inglewood First United Methodist Church.
