A Methodist minister for more than 50 years, Rev. James M. Lawson, Jr. is internationally recognized as the leading strategist and trainer in the principles of nonviolence to 1960’s Civil Rights leaders as well as being a confidant of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Rev. Lawson continues to be actively involved in training countless women and men on nonviolent resistance to achieve social justice. Rev. Lawson served as pastor of Holman United Methodist from 1974 until his retirement in 1999. He has taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, California State University, Northridge, and countless other educational institutions.
A few months ago, on a motion by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to proclaim September 22nd, Rev. Lawson’s 92nd birthday, as “Rev. James M. Lawson, Jr. Day.”
Rev. Lawson remains active with preaching and teaching engagements throughout the country along with conducting nonviolence workshops locally and overseas. He leads his nonviolence workshop every fourth Saturday at Holman.
